Wisconsin DUI Ignition Interlock Device (IID)

An Ignition Interlock Device is a breathalyzer which is attached to the starter of a vehicle.  An IID must be used prior to starting the vehicle and about every 15 to 30 minutes throughout a driving trip to ensure the driver is not consuming alcohol.

Who needs an IID?

If you are convicted of a first offense DUI with a BAC over .15, an IID must be installed.  Any person found guilty of two or more DUIs is required to install the ignition interlock device.  If an interlock is mandatory, you have to have it installed for the length of your license suspension.

Are IIDs expensive?

Yes. The cost is about $1,200 to $1,300 per year for one vehicle.  If your license is suspended for three years, you are expected to pay up to $4,000 for each IID.

What’s the Point of an Ignition Interlock?

An Ignition Interlock Device is a mandatory penalty to deter drivers from consuming alcohol before getting behind the wheel.  If a person blows into the device and has a BAC over .02, the vehicle will not start.  Having the IID installed forces a Wisconsin driver to acknowledge use of alcohol and be able to stay at a BAC which is still safe.

What if I Fail an IID While Driving?

The Ignition Interlock Device will randomly beep while driving, which requires the driver to blow into the device for alcohol testing.  If a driver fails an IID, the vehicle will become extremely uncomfortable to drive (i.e. the radio blares, the horn honks, the lights flash, etc.)  It will report a failed breath test at its next calibration.

Consequences of Driving without an IID

You will face high fines and other severe penalties if you drive without the IID.
