Field Sobriety Tests are used to help police officers determine coordination skills.  A police officer will come to a conclusion about whether a person is intoxicated based on the coordination and balance of a person.  There are some Field Sobriety Tests that do not weigh as heavily on this determination as others, such as saying the Alphabet backwards.  However, the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) recognizes three standard sobriety tests.  These Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFST’s) are used across the country, and when administered correctly, have valid and reliable results.  The three Standardized Field Sobriety Tests used when making an arrest for a Wisconsin DUI are the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN), the Walk and Turn (WAT), and the One Leg Stand (OLS).
