Increased DUI Charges over Thanksgiving Weekend
The AAA reports that the Thanksgiving holiday weekend is the busiest travel period of the year. This year’s improved economy leads way to a projected increase in travel, with one million more Americans traveling this Thanksgiving as compared to last year. This holiday weekend will be the busiest in travel since 2007, with the vast majority on the US roadways.
Americans drink more alcohol this time of year. Thanksgiving Eve is sometimes referred to as “Blackout Wednesday.” The long weekend combined with many of us reunited with family and friends makes the Wednesday before Turkey Day unofficially considered the busiest bar night of the year. Many of us include cocktails in our Thanksgiving Day festivities as a way to celebrate or means to deal with family, especially with the recent hotly debated election.

Combining the two factors leads to an increase in DUI’s over the holiday weekend. Several law enforcement agencies across southeastern Wisconsin take part in the Southeast Wisconsin OWI Task Force. Their primary goal in this effort is to stop drivers who are drunk or impaired. Although they gear up on all major holidays, Thanksgiving weekend leads to more arrests than the rest of the year. If you are travelling this holiday weekend, make sure you are safe to drive by monitoring your drinking or even better, by designating a sober driver.
