This year is the second year for the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” National Campaign across the country.  This year’s campaign runs from August 17 to September 3.  This includes Labor Day weekend, which was not included last year.  The purpose of the Campaign is a crackdown on drunk driving, not only in Wisconsin, but across the country.  Wisconsin police officers will be on extra patrol with longer hours, looking specifically for intoxicated drivers.

Raising Awareness of Drunk Driving in Wisconsin

Wisconsin is known for drinking, and some people drive after having a couple drinks.  They may not think they are drunk, but variables such as gender, weight, and the Amount of Food a person can affect Blood Alcohol Content (BAC).  A light-weight person may have two drinks, feel comfortable to drive, but will have a BAC over the legal limit if pulled over.  The “Drive Sober of Get Pulled Over” campaign raises a person’s awareness of how much they drank by having extra visible patrols on the roads.  When Wisconsin police officers are seen in full force, it can deter people from driving after having a few drinks.

This year’s campaign also goes through Labor Day weekend. Many holidays have more people on the roadways, and many of these people have made the choice to drink and drive.  Driving drunk is dangerous, but more lives are at risk during a busy holiday weekend.

Emphasis of Consequences on Drunk Driving in Wisconsin

The Penalties of a Wisconsin DUI has personal, social, professional, and financial consequences.  A person may feel shame, guilt, embarrassment, etc. after receiving a Wisconsin DUI.  Friends and family members may have a new outlook towards you.  They may be less trusting or more demanding of your safety (and the safety of those around you).  The Suspension of a Wisconsin Driver’s License could impact a person’s ability and freedom to get to and from work (or other places such as the grocery store).  There are many financial aspects that come with a Wisconsin DUI.  The fine, the installation of the Ignition Interlock Device (IID), the Alcohol Assessment and/or AODA class, the increase in insurance, etc. are all financial hardships that come with a Wisconsin DUI.  However, a person could Lose A Lot More.

Maximizing Wisconsin Police Enforcement

Wisconsin police officers will patrol in greater numbers and for longer hours during the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” Campaign (Aug. 17- Sept. 3).  The idea is that when people see more officers on the roads, they will think before they drink, and not get into a car and drive.  The more police that are visible, the greater the risk of getting pulled over.  Wisconsin officers are trained to Observe Drunk Driving and will pull someone over.
